How to Initiate Counseling

Follow these guidelines to find the best counseling solution for you:

Check with your insurance provider to find out if they cover counseling/mental health services and then get the details of your coverage. Do they allow you to go to “out-of-network” providers?

Choose two or three possible providers for an exploratory conversation. Ask them:

What is their education/training and licensure status? (Insurance may only cover a licensed therapist.)

In what areas do they specialize? Does that match your specific issue or concern?

How do they integrate faith in their practice?

What are their fees and do they accept insurance? Do they have a sliding-fee scale? If they don’t process insurance, will they provide documentation for you to obtain reimbursement?

What is their payment policy? Do they bill you or require payment at each session?

How soon will they be able to book your first appointment?

What is the length and frequency of sessions and the expected duration of treatment?

How do they handle cancellations or emergency appointments?

Do they provide only in-person sessions or Zoom or phone options?

Once you make a choice, remember that you are hiring them. If after the first couple of sessions you are no longer comfortable with your choice, try another option. Just keep in mind that counseling is often difficult and stressful and you do have to get to know each other. A certain amount of discomfort and anxiety are normal and to be expected. Discern whether your concern is the counselor or simply the issues being covered.

Ending counseling is ultimately the decision of the client. Some issues may need a longer term of therapy while others can be dealt with effectively in a few sessions.

Discuss your progress regularly with your counselor and agree together on when to end or adjust the frequency of appointments. It is important that you neither end pre-maturely, before gaining the full benefit of counseling, nor continue on needlessly, becoming dependent on your counselor.
